About Dr. Goldstein



Training

Dr. Goldstein is a graduate of Cornell University (a member of the Ivy League), where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences in 1993. Following this, he received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1998, where he achieved honors in twenty three separate courses, placing him in the top five percent of his graduating class. He completed his General Surgery Residency in 2003 in Chicago, Illinois with the University of Illinois Metropolitan Group Hospitals Residency in General Surgery, and his Fellowship in Advanced Minimally Invasive, Robotic, and Bariatric Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center in 2004. He has also received advanced training in Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy at the University of Wisconsin and at Hackensack University Hospital.  At the conclusion of his surgical training, Dr. Goldstein was the recipient of the Resident Achievement Award in Laparoscopic Surgery from the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.


Experience

Dr. Goldstein is Board Certified by The American Board of Surgery (just as MD's are) as a General Surgeon, fellowship trained in advanced laparoscopic, bariatric, and robotic surgery, licensed to practice medicine in Virginia, Florida, and New Jersey, and certified to use the DaVinci Robotic System to perform minimally invasive surgery. He is an Assistant Professor at The Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, as well as a member of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO), Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS), and Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). He has served as an Executive Committee Member of the Camden County Medical Society, as a member of the Clinical Operations Committee of Summit Surgical Center, and on the Ethics Committee of Jefferson Health New Jersey Hospital System.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).


Dr. Goldstein has authored numerous publications and video presentations related to advanced minimally invasive and bariatric surgery, and has instructed residents and students at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center, Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Lutheran General Hospital, Morristown Memorial Hospital, and Sentara Health System, some of the nation's leading teaching hospitals. He currently contributes to the training of future surgeons by instructing surgical residents of the Eastern Virginia Medical School Surgery Residency Program.


Prior to moving to Virginia in the fall of 2024, Dr. Goldstein practiced in southern New Jersey, just outside of Philadelphia, for 19 years, and has been named a "Top Doc" in Southern New Jersey Magazines 14 times.  He has also been interviewed on both television (NBC Philadelphia's morning show) and radio about his practice.

Dr. Goldstein is a member of Sentara Surgery Specialists, part of the Sentara Medical Group, and practices primarily at the Sentara CarePlex Hospital located at 3000 Coliseum Drive in Hampton, Virginia.  His specialties include open and minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) general surgery (hernia surgery, gallbladder surgery, spleen surgery, intestinal surgery, gastroesophageal reflux surgery, soft tissue surgery, and more!).

Our office is open to receive phone calls Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) from 8:30am - 5:00pm.  Our answering service is available, for urgent issues for the on-call surgeon only, at all other times.  For emergent problems, please go to your nearest emergency room or call 911.
